The Nintendo Switch lacks backwards compatibility with the Nintendo Wii U console, which means you cannot play your library of Nintendo Wii U games on the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo Switch cannot play Nintendo Wii U games for two primary reasons: game format differences and technical hardware differences.
These two parameters prevent Nintendo Wii U games from playing on Nintendo Switch consoles.

Nintendo Wii U VS Nintendo Switch: Game Format Differences
Physical games for Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch are made with different physical storage media.
Nintendo Wii U games are proprietary Blu-Ray discs while Nintendo Switch games are proprietary game cards.
The Nintendo Wii U has a disc reader game slot, whereas the Nintendo Switch has a game card reader game slot.
Nintendo Wii U games will not fit in a Nintendo Switch game slot
The differences in format between Nintendo’s two consoles makes it physically impossible for the Nintendo Switch’s game card slot to accept Nintendo Wii U disc-based physical games.
In other words, each game console’s physical game slots are not interchangeable with each other’s physical games.
Thus, Nintendo Wii U games will not fit into a Nintendo Switch game slot (and vice versa).
I verified Nintendo Wii U games do not work with the Nintendo Switch through personal testing.

Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch have different technical hardware components produced many years apart which makes playing digital and physical Nintendo Wii U games on Nintendo Switch impossible.

In simple terms, the Nintendo Wii U (released in 2012) used similar components and has core technical similarities to Nintendo’s two previous home consoles.[1]
This included the Nintendo Wii console (released in 2006) and even the Nintendo GameCube (released in 2001).
Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch (released in 2017) used more modern technical hardware and software engineering.
Nintendo Switch’s core technical hardware dates back to 2014 with electronics using the technology starting in 2015.[2][3]

For comparisons sake, the Nintendo Wii U technical hardware used parts engineered during the late 1990s whereas Nintendo Switch technical hardware was based upon parts made in the mid 2010s.
That is about a 15 year difference in technical hardware between consoles.
That’s like 1,000 years in electronics-years. I say, wow!

The same reasoning is why Nintendo Wii U software lacks compatibility with the Nintendo Switch.
Each console is vastly different because of their age gap and the components used to produce each.
Speaking practically, video game developers must put time and money into bringing a game from one system to another when technology and hardware differ between game consoles.
This means that developers must “re-do” and re-release their digital or physical game for each individual game system.
Technology improves, evolves, and physical media changes.
Hence that lack of game compatibility between Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch software libraries.
Nintendo Wii U VS Nintendo Switch: Digital Account Differences
Nintendo used a different digital account management system with Nintendo Wii U when compared to the Nintendo Switch.
This difference in digital account systems is another primary factor why digital Nintendo Wii U games will not work on Nintendo Switch systems.
The Nintendo Wii U used an account system that tied user purchased software to a physical Nintendo Wii U console.
Conversely, the Nintendo Switch used a digital account system that tied a user’s purchased content to a virtual account instead of a specific console.

Nintendo Wii U tied purchased digital content to a specific Nintendo Wii U console by using what was called a Nintendo Network ID.
A single Nintendo Wii U console tethered all digital content to itself, for better or for worse.
Think of the Nintendo Wii U’s digital account system being comparable to a Compact Disc (CD) with a track list of songs:
- Lose your CD and lose all of your songs; you must purchase a new CD
Nintendo Switch tied purchased digital content to the player’s digital Nintendo Account (separate from the console) that virtually stores all digital content for that account.
Think of the Nintendo Switch’s digital account system as being like any other modern digital account systems such as Amazon or Apple:
- Lose your phone and you can simply buy a new phone, log into your Amazon or Apple account, and re-download your paid content
Nintendo has stated it created the Nintendo Account digital account system to build “long-term mutually positive relationships” with consumers which can be interpreted as allowing customers to keep their purchased content going forward.[4][5]
At one point in time, Nintendo Wii U’s system-specific Nintendo Network ID could connect to a Nintendo Account, but it only allowed funds to be used across Nintendo consoles.
This semi-account connection, however, did not allow for the transferal of games.
All in all, technical hardware differences–as previously mentioned–along with separate account systems prevented digital Nintendo Wii U games from working on Nintendo Switch consoles.
