I was new to Paladins not so long ago and I could have used all the help I could get in order to pick the best character for newbies in this multiplayer online game. That is why I cooked up this helpful guide to explain to you the best picks for players new to Paladins: Champions of the Realm.

Vivan, Dredge, Sky, Moji, Grover, Grohk, Ruckus, Fernando are the top 8 Paladins characters I recommend for beginners new to the game.

Keep on reading as I explain who each character is, what they do, and their play style.

But before we do, what is Paladins, exactly?

What is Paladins?

Paladins is a fun fantasy-themed team based, multiplayer, online first person shooter for computers and consoles, including the Nintendo Switch.

Teams of 5 real people battle another team of 5 real people from around the globe in various versus game modes until there is a winner.

What is a Champion?

A Champion is a character. Players pick a character before their match to play as during the match.

Each Champion has different abilities, health, movement speeds, and so forth thus dictating how each character feels and plays.

With a roster of dozens of characters and growing, Paladins supplies a Champion for your every play style (and then some).

The Four Champion Categories

Each Champion is categorized in one of 4 main roles

  • A Damage Champion’s main goal and strength is to deal a lot of damage. These characters will do the brunt of the battling during a match.
  • A Flank Champion’s role is to sneak up on opponents from the sides or from behind to grab an elimination or to finish an opponent damaged by teammates.
  • A Support Champion’s job is to heal their teammate’s health so they can keep living to fight another day.
  • A Frontline Champion’s duty is to lead their team into battle. Frontline Champions have a lot of health and usually have a shield they can use to protect their team from enemy fire.

Now that you know the four main types of Champions, it is time to look at the 8 Paladins Champions I recommend for beginners.

Vivian

Damage Champion

Vivian is a cunning soldier who wields a light machine gun that can shoot fast and rack up a lot of damage in a short amount of time.

  • Pick Vivian if you want to spray bullets and knock out opponents with ease.
  • Vivian also comes with a self shield that can protect her from enemy fire for short periods of time.
  • Her primary drawback is that she is slow and lacks speed when it comes to mobility, making it harder to escape battles when the need to retreat arises.

I highly recommend Vivian to you if you want to mow down foes and feel awesome doing so.

Dredge

Damage Champion

Dredge is an undead pirate that lobs explosive projectiles from his cursed gun.

  • His explosives can be shot all over the battlefield in bursts of 3 to deal decent damage to the entire enemy team within proximity or in concentrated single explosive shots one at a time.
  • It is very easy to rack up damage with Dredge using either method.
  • On top of his explosive shots, the undead pirate can also throw an explosive harpoon that can damage opponents from afar.
  • Dredge’s main drawback has to be his slow movement speed and slower than average reload speed.
  • He can deal large amounts of damage but make sure you avoid reloading in the middle of battle. Running out of ammo may allow your opponent to finish you off in the time it takes Dredge to restock his explosives.

I highly recommend Dredge if you are looking to smother the entire battlefield with explosives to rack up tons of damage.

Sky

Flank Champion

Sky is a quick and nimble noble assassin who fires crossbows from her wrists.

  • Her crossbows shoot in rapid succession (dealing damage just as quickly) and can be reloaded in the blink of an eye which makes Sky a deadly force to reckon with.
  • On top of her normal crossbow darts, Sky also comes equipped with poison darts that will continue to eat away at your opponent’s health once hit.
  • Sky and her attacks make kills easy, but so does her ability to turn invisible. She can disappear and reappear when your opponent’s least expect.
  • Sneak and destroy is Sky’s motto. The noble assassin, however, does not have a lot of health and will find herself eliminated rather quickly when up against a Damage Champion or Frontline Champion who has a lot of health.

I highly recommend Sky if you are looking to be a sneaky damage dealer.

Moji

Flank Champion

Moji is a small rabbit-like creature that rides her double-headed creature into battle.

  • Her dragon mount creatures spit continuous fire that does not need to be reloaded, giving Moji an advantage in a fire fight against opponents that have to reload their weapons (which is a majority of Champions).
  • Moji can also dash towards her opponents or away from them, and she also comes equipped with a temporary invulnerability move that protects her from harm.
  • Moji’s slow movement speed and minimal health make her an easy target for Champions on the opposing team so keep moving and breathing fire to stay in the game.

I highly recommend Moji if you are looking for a more methodical flank character that moves at a slower pace than her counterparts.

Grover

Support Champion

Grover is an axe-wielding sentient tree with healing abilities.

The “soul of the forest”, as the game calls Grover, can heal allies around him with a burst of healing.

  • His Ultimate Ability, which is a powerful skill that builds up overtime in order to be used, rapidly heals anyone around him for a longer than usual duration.
  • On top of both healing moves, Grover is also great if you want to stay away from your opponents at a safe distance.
  • His throwing axes actually deal more damage the farther you are from an enemy Champion. What’s better? His axes are unlimited and do not need to be reloaded.
  • Grover is not the fastest moving Champion, however, so he needs to keep moving away from his opponents to stay alive and to be able to deal the ideal amount of damage.

I highly recommend Grover to anyone interested in healing their group but doesn’t mind staying away from foes.

Grohk

Support Champion

Grohk is an Orc who uses a lightning rod to zap opponents and heal allies.

  • Grohk’s main priority is to heal. By setting down his Healing Totem, anyone within proximity will gain health for a short period of time or until his totem is destroyed (whatever happens first).
  • He also deals consistent damage with his lightning staff with a continuous electric spray that does not need to be reloaded as often as other Champion’s weapons.
  • Grohk can also zap opponents with an electric attack that bounces between enemies.
  • And finally, Grohk can become invisible for short periods of time to protect himself from harm.
  • Grohk is a well-rounded character that can heal and do damage, but is brought down by his slow speed and location based healing.

I highly recommend Grohk if you are looking for an all-around Champion that can also heal his allies from time to time.

Ruckus

Frontline Champion

Ruckus is a little Goblin that rides inside a robot called Bolt.

  • Ruckus and Bolt are a great combination if you’re looking to stay alive, deal a lot of damage, and have access to plentiful ammo as well as a self shield.
  • Ruckus is nearly the total package, able to withstand a lot of attacks to better help his team move forward against the opposing team.
  • He also fairs well in one-on-one battles against many opposing Champions.
  • Ruckus is a bit on the slow side, though, and will fall victim to elimination if overwhelmed in a fire fight due to his slow ability to retreat.
  • Positioning is all important for this cool duo.

I highly recommended Ruckus to anyone looking for a Frontline that can not only take damage and control the front-line but to also deal damage in return.

Fernando

Frontline Champion

Fernando is a cocky knight-in-armor who is the stereotypical Frontline: a sturdy character with a giant shield to protect his team.

  • Step out in front of your allies and use Fernando’s giant shield to lead your team into battle, protecting yourself and your allies from oncoming fire.
  • Fernando also has a dash maneuver that allows him to get away or closer to another player on the spot.
  • His arm cannon spits continuous fire that does not need to be reloaded as often as other Champion’s weapons.

This knight’s downside must be his fire attack’s relatively low damage output along with his dependency of his shield: if you are not shielding, Fernando is not as good as most other Champions in the game.

I highly recommend Fernando to anyone looking to understand what a Frontline is all about.
