Let’s take a look at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s major multiplayer supported modes.

Spirit Board Multiplayer Mode

Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s Spirit Board multiplayer option allows more than one person to fight a Spirit (a computer controlled opponent).

Rewards will be adjusted based on the number of people playing.

Classic Mode Multiplayer Mode

Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s Classic Mode allows more than one person to battle a bracket of six fights and a boss fight together.

Home-Run Contest Multiplayer Modes

Smash Online Multiplayer Mode

Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s Online Quickplay mode allows up to two people to play online at one time on one Nintendo Switch console.

What Is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Main Multiplayer Mode?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s primary multiplayer mode is the Smash mode. Smash Mode allows one to eight players to pick a fighter and brawl against each-other or with each-other in teams. Multiplayer is frantic, fast paced, and is a perfect party experience.

Smash mode is presented on the main menu and provides 4 sub modes for players to play together at the same time: Smash, Squad Strike, Tourney, and Special Smash.

All four Smash Modes allow multiple people to battle against each other at the same time on a single Nintendo Switch system.

Smash Mode Multiplayer

Smash is the primary way people play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate together.

Up to eight players pick a stage, a fighter, a rule set, and start battling.

Squad Strike Multiplayer

Squad Strike allows multiple people to battle against one another with teams of 3 or 5.

This is a great mode for players who enjoy to play as more than one character.

Tourney Mode Multiplayer

Tourney Mode allows up to 32 players to battle in a tournament-bracket style competition.

Up to 32 people can join by simply exchanging controllers.

Tourney mode is great for settings such as school and church programs, work and get-together sessions, and birthday parties among other occasions where large groups of people gather.

Special Smash Mode

Lastly, Special Smash allows up to eight players to play traditional Smash mode but with a variety of quirky rules and custom settings.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Modes That Cannot Be Played Multiplayer

Not every mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch can be played with multiplayer option. Modes that can only be played by one person include the game’s Adventure Mode among certain online modes.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Modes That Can’t Be Played Multiplayer

  • Adventure Mode
  • Training Mode*
  • certain online modes

Adventure Mode Is Single Player Only

Sadly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s main story adventure mode (called The World of Light) does not include a multiplayer option and only supports single player.

*Training Mode Is Single Player (With 2 Player Option)

Training Mode, in which players battle against a computer controlled opponent, can only be played by one person as well.

Although, a second controller can be connected to join the training mode once it is in session.

Enabling multiplayer training in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is relatively simple:

  1. Enter training mode
  2. press the plus button to open the training options
  3. choose CPU Behavior
  4. set CPU Behavior to Control

This workaround setting allows two people to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s training mode together.

Certain Online Modes Are Single Player Only

Finally, certain online modes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are limited to one player only.

A majority of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s many game modes, however, support two or more people playing at the same time.

Most multiplayer modes actually allow up to eight players to play at the same time on one Nintendo Switch console.

VERDICT: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the ultimate party and multiplayer game (pun intended). I highly suggest this game if you’re looking for a new multiplayer game that includes frantic action for casual party settings or more competitive situations.
