Thank you for reading my article, fellow gamer!

I’ve played games my entire life and have come up with a few techniques that may help you select a game to play.

In total, there are five beneficial techniques that can assist players in choosing their next game to play: play what you want to play, play a genre you enjoy, play based on how you feel, play a game with a friend or family member, or don’t even play a game at all.

Using these techniques have helped me select my next game whenever I’m stuck with analysis paralysis or having a hard time finding what to play.

Now, let’s delve deeper into my helpful techniques that should help make game selection easier.

How To Choose The Next Game You Play

Selecting a new game to play can feel daunting or overwhelming sometimes. To lessen these feelings, start by choosing a game you enjoy or from a genre you like to play. Try selecting the type of game that gels with how you’re currently feeling.

You might even want to play with friends or family to make the decision easier.

Or you might not even want to play a game at all.

5 Things That Can Make Game Selection Easier

  1. Play What You Want To Play
  2. Play The Genre You Enjoy
  3. Play Based On How You Feel
  4. Play A Game With Friends Or Family
  5. Don’t Play A Game

Following these 5 simple techniques may help improve your game selection process. It for sure has helped me!

1) Play What You Want To Play

Play what you want to play instead of the newest game, the trending game, or whatever gaming YouTubers or influencers are telling you to play.

You don’t have to play

  • Minecraft
  • Roblox
  • Call of Duty
  • League of Legends
  • Your friend’s favorite game
  • the current trending game
  • the newest, hottest, bestest release

The easiest way to become burned out on gaming and being unable too decide what to play next is by only playing what others are playing.

What’s the point in playing a game if you don’t actually want to play it?

Doing so will most likely lead to feeling bored or disliking the gaming experience.

Therefore, pick a game you actually like.

If you don’t enjoy Minecraft, don’t play Minecraft.

The same goes for any popular or trending game, from Fortnite and Roblox to The Legend of Zelda or even Super Mario Bros.

Play what you actually think you’ll enjoy (and not what others enjoy) to help make your next game selection just a tad simpler.

2) Play The Genre You Enjoy

Selecting a game to play can be made easier if you start by picking a video game genre you know you’ll enjoy playing.

Otherwise, selecting a game from a genre you dislike or think is boring is only going to make matters worse.

Why play a role playing game if you know you’re not a fan?

Or why play first person shooters if they’re too hectic and demanding to play?

Think about the games you play and which ones you enjoy the most. Then, search for games similar to those games you do enjoy.

For instance, fans of Stardew Valley may want to try Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Fae Farm, Story of Seasons, or Littlewood.

And fans of Super Mario Bros. should try other action platformer games such as Rayman Legends, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

The easiest way to select your next game is simply by looking inward at your gaming genre preferences and finding a game that matches your own personal tastes.

Identifying the video game genres you like will go a long way in helping you pick a cool new game to play.

3) Play Based On How You Feel

Let how you feel determine the next game you play.

Sometimes, you might find yourself wanting to play a game but you may be too tired for demanding games such as action, shooters, or team-based affairs.

Really, I can relate.

I enjoy playing games after a long day of work but often find myself too tired to play intense sessions of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or Monster Hunter.

Instead of brute forcing my way into a less-than-stellar experience for the night, I’ll listen to my sleepy, tired body. Time to select an alternative to play.

For example, I know I like puzzle games and I play everything from Sudoku, Tetris, and Suika Game to hidden search games.

This is due to having personally identified the video game genres I enjoy by using the previous technique.

Additionally, puzzle games are usually more laid-back affairs (for the most part) I know I can play at the end of the day.

Based on how tired I am on a given day, I’ll whittle down my short list of puzzle games to only the easiest and least demanding.

Say good bye to Tetris and Suika Game.

Therefore, I’m left with playing Sudoku or a hidden search game, either will be easy to play even if I’m tired.

Listening to your body and understanding how much energy you have for a gaming session can help you more easily identify what game you should play next.

I repeat: listen to your body the next time you play a game.

Avoid stressful games if you are already stressed or intense games if you’re feel anxious.

Play the games your body and mind will enjoy for an arguably better gaming experience.

4) Play A Game With Friends Or Family

Playing games with friends or family can help make choosing your next game way easier.

This is due to allowing the group, your friend, significant other, or relative choose the game.

After all, decision making is made simpler when the burden of choice is distributed among more than just yourself.

Let me relay a personal example.

My spouse and I enjoy playing video games together and I often ask her what game we should play.

This not only takes her feelings and preferences into consideration but it also helps me decide on a game to play.

Sometimes, my significant other simply enjoys watching me play and will choose story games such as Xenoblade Chronicles or Persona.

Other times, she’ll want to play cooperative games like Diablo, Gauntlet, or Super Mario Bros. We might even play single player puzzle games together if she suggests.

Additionally, I play with my gaming group of friends at least once a week and the game we play is chosen by what the majority of the group is interested in playing.

I always wanted to play the Borderlands series but never got around to doing so. My gaming group selected the series which took the game selection process off my shoulders.

Letting others select a game to play or playing with others who are already playing a game can be tons of fun and also help with decision paralysis.

5) Don’t Play A Game

Lastly, the best way to pick a game to play is simply by not picking a game to play.

This might sound contradictory but there is one thing we should all remember: don’t force yourself to do something you don’t want to do.

Especially because you think you have to do it.

Simply put, you don’t have to play games. Games are entertainment meant to be fun, enjoyable, and/or engrossing.

Choosing a game to play when one doesn’t feel compelled to play can leave one feeling dissatisfied or worse.

Instead, take a break from gaming and put your life energy into doing things that interest you in the current moment.

Put your time into other hobbies that may have been neglected due to gaming taking up the majority of your free time. Or explore and start a new hobby.

It’s important to make sure you’re enjoying yourself whether or not you’re playing games.

Taking time away from playing games may eventually lead to missing gaming instead of feeling an obligation to play.

This is the magic of simply not selecting a game to play. Time away makes the heart grow fonder.

And if you interest in gaming hasn’t returned after some time, you still had fun having performed hobbies you did find interesting.

Put the controller down the next time you think you have to play a game and do something else you enjoy or try something new.

Time away form gaming may help in the long term.
