Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (for Nintendo Switch) fighting game roster includes dozens of iconic and well-known gaming characters. And today, I’ll detail all of them for you in one convenient guide.

In total, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate includes 74 individual characters plus 12 additional paid downloadable content (DLC) characters. This brings the grand total of characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to a whopping 86 total fighters. One of the largest rosters in any fighting game, ever!

Additionally, the roster balloons further if one includes multi-character fighters such as Pyra and Mythra from the Xenoblade Chronicles series as well as the Pokemon Trainer’s three separate Pokemon.

Super Smash Bros. Complete Character Roster

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate includes 86 characters from a litany of Nintendo and non-Nintendo franchises from Super Mario Bros. to Pokemon, Pac-Man to Street Fighter, and everything in between.

You’re sure to find a character to play as in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate no matter what gaming genre or franchise you adore.

Characters are ordered by their official game Fighter Number. This number loosely represents the order in which each character debuted in the Super Smash Bros. series.

NOTE: The official roster numbering includes an “e” symbol. This stands for “Echo” Fighter; that is, a character that looks different yet plays similarly to another character.

NOTE: The official Super Smash Bros. Fighter Number system counts Pokemon Trainer’s three Pokemon as separate fighters as well as Pyra and Mythra as two separate fighters.

Additionally, the official Fighter Number system counts Echo Fighters as the same number as the character they’re based upon.

How Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Roster Compares To Super Smash Bros. 64’s Roster

Released in 1999, the first Super Smash Bros. (for Nintendo 64) included a 12 fighter roster compared to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s 86 character roster.

The original Super Smash Bros. roster included well known favorites such as Mario and Luigi as well as obscure characters at the time such as Ness (from the Earthbound series) and Captain Falcon (from the F-Zero series).

Released in 2001, Super Smash Bros. Melee (for Nintendo GameCube) included a 25 fighter roster compared to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s 86 character roster.

All 12 characters from the original Super Smash Bros. returned in Super Smash Bros. Melee, including 13 new fighters.

Super Smash Bros. Melee’s roster included well known additions such as Zelda and Mewtwo as well as obscure characters at the time such as Marth and Roy (from the Fire Emblem series).

Released in 2008, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (for Nintendo Wii) included a 35 fighter roster compared to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s 86 character roster.

21 returning characters from the Super Smash Bros. Melee returned in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, including 15 new fighters.

Mewtwo, Roy, Pichu, and Young Link were omitted from the game’s roster.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s roster included well known additions such as Wario and Pokemon trainer, obscure characters at the time such as Pit (from the Kid Icarus series), as well as non-Nintendo characters (a series first).

Sonic the Hedgehog and Snake (from the Metal Gear Solid series) were included as playable characters.

Lastly, the fighter Samus included a variant called Zero Suit Samus.

That is, Samus as she looks like without her armor with her own unique move set. Zero Suit Samus, however, is not a standalone character in this entry.

How Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Roster Compares To Super Smash Bros. For Wii U/3DS’s Roster

Released in 2014, Super Smash Bros. For (for Nintendo Wii U/3DS) included a 58 fighter roster compared to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s 86 character roster.

37 returning characters from Super Smash Bros. Melee returned in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, including 21 new fighters.

Ice Climbers, Snake, Young Link, Wolf, and Pichu were omitted from the game’s roster.

Instead, Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s roster included well known additions such as Mega Man and Pac-Man as well as obscure fighters such as Little Mac (from the Punch Out series) and Duck Hunt (from the Nintendo Entertainment System game Duck Hunt).

Furthermore, Super Smash Bros. For became the first entry in the series to add optional, purchasable downloadable content (DLC) playable fighters.

Paid DLC fighters added in Super Smash Bros. For included new and returning characters.

Mewtwo, Lucas, and Roy were added back to the roster as paid DLC fighters.
