Changing the sound settings in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate only requires a few simple steps: navigate to the home screen, access the Options menu, select Sound category, and adjust the game’s sound volumes to your liking.

How To Change Sound Settings In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s sound settings allows players to individually adjust volume levels for the game’s background music, sound effects (SFX), and voices.
Changing sound settings only takes a few moments and is rather easy to accomplish once you know what you’re doing.
Important things to note about changing this Super Smash Bros. Ultimate setting:
- music, sound effect, and voice volumes can all be changed individually
- TV, portable, and headphone volumes can all be changed individually
- changing sound settings is not permanent
- sound settings can be altered whenever you want
*Button prompts used in this guide are default settings*
*This guide is based on using a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Pair/Nintendo Switch Pro Controller*
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Make sure your Nintendo Switch and controller batteries are charged. This will prevent your controller or console from shutting off.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- a Nintendo Switch
- a controller

1) Access Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Main Menu

Load Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s main menu by simply starting the game.
2) Load The Secondary Settings Pane By Pressing ZR

Press the ZR button (default controls) or navigate to the right of the screen with analog inputs/directional button inputs.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s secondary settings menu will appear on-screen.
3) Select “Options” From The List Of Menu Choices

Navigate down to the Options menu and select it.
Press the confirm button (A button by default) to be taken to the Options screen.
4) Select “Sound” Category

Use the directional buttons or (left) analog stick to select Sound from the list of categories.
Press the confirm button to be taken to the Sound settings screen.
5) Change Volume Settings

Select Music, SFX, and/or Voices to adjust the volume balance of each.
Highlight each sound option and use the (left) analog stick or directional buttons to adjust the volume from 0 (no volume) to 100 ( max volume).
- Moving the bar to the left will lower volume
- Moving the bar to the right will increase volume
Adjust Equalization in order to change low and high tone balance.
Use the (left) analog stick or directional buttons to choose your preferred Equalization settings:
- More Bass: “low tones will be emphasized, adding more weight to the sound”
- Normal: “low tones and high tones will be balanced”
- More Treble: “high tones will be emphasized, making melodies and vocals easier to hear”
Test your current sound settings by highlighting Test and press the confirm button.
Press the X button to reset your changes.
Highlight OK and press the confirm button to save your sound settings. Alternatively, pressing the + (plus) button will save your sound settings.
NOTE 1: Sound settings for TV mode, Portable mode, and headphone use will be saved individually and can be altered by selecting the tabs at the top of the screen.
You can only select the tab of your current mode (TV or Portable) and headphone by pressing L or R shoulder buttons (default buttons).
NOTE 2: You can also view the My Music game option to “change the frequency that songs will play per stage” by selecting My Music and pressing the confirm button.
You can also view the Sounds game option to “listen to your favorite songs and sounds from the game” by selecting Sounds and pressing the confirm button.

In TV Mode, I personally set my Music to 100, SFX (sound effects) to 65, and voices to 75. My Equalization is set to More Treble.
These sound settings prioritize the game’s awesome music, lowers sound effects, and allows voices to come through. Fiddle with sound settings until you find what’s best for you!
6) Confirm Your Sound Settings

Highlight OK and press the confirm button to confirm your sound settings. Alternatively, pressing the + (plus) button will confirm your sound settings.
7) Play The Game With Your New Setting
Enjoy playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with your new sound settings.
