Making an online profile in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate only requires a few simple steps: navigate to the home screen, access the Options menu, select Online category, and make a profile to your liking.

Making an online profile will help you uniquely customize an online avatar to identify you in online lobbies and matches. Known as a “Smash Tag”, these online profiles will be shared with others after online interactions (such as winning or losing online battles).

How To Make An Online Smash Tag Profile In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch)

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s online profile creator allows players to make an online identity tag to their liking. A Smash Tag online profile’s icon picture, color, and taunt messages can all be customized.

Making an online profile only takes a few moments and is rather easy to accomplish once you know what you’re doing.

Important things to note about changing this Super Smash Bros. Ultimate setting

  • the Nintendo Switch profile used to play the game will be the name of the Smash Tag
  • 500+ images are available for the Smash Tag’s Icon option
  • 12 colors are available for the Smash Tag’s Color option
  • 40+ messages are available for the Smash Tag’s Taunt Messages option
  • changing online profile settings is not permanent
  • an online profile settings can be altered whenever you want

*Button prompts used in this guide are default settings*

*This guide is based on using a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Pair/Nintendo Switch Pro Controller*

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Make sure your Nintendo Switch and controller batteries are charged. This will prevent your controller or console from shutting off.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • a Nintendo Switch
  • a controller

1) Access Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Main Menu

Load Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s main menu by simply starting the game.


2) Load The Secondary Settings Pane By Pressing ZR

Press the ZR button (default controls) or navigate to the right of the screen with analog inputs/directional button inputs.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s secondary settings menu will appear on-screen.


3) Select “Options” From The List Of Menu Choices

Navigate down to the Options menu and select it.

Press the confirm button (A button by default) to be taken to the Options screen.


4) Select “Online” Category

Use the directional buttons or (left) analog stick to select Online from the list of categories.

Press the confirm button to be taken to the Online profile settings screen.


5) Change The Profile Icon

Highlight the Icon option.

Press the confirm button to access the profile icon library.

  • Over 500 profile icons are available across many different games, series, and gaming properties

Select the icon you want to use for your profile with the (left) analog stick or directional buttons.

Press the confirm button to chose your selection.


6) Change The Profile Color

Highlight the Color option.

Press the confirm button to access the profile color library.

There are 12 profile colors to choose from:

  • red
  • orange
  • yellow
  • light green
  • green
  • blue
  • light blue
  • pink
  • purple
  • brown
  • grey
  • black

Select the color you want to use for your profile with the (left) analog stick or directional buttons.

Press the confirm button to chose your selection.


7) Change The Profile Taunt Messages

Highlight the Taunt Messages option.

Press the confirm button to access the taunt messages menu.

  • Over 50 messages can be used during the pre-battle countdown
  • Over 40 messages can be used during the post-battle results page
  • 4 of each can be selected and assigned to the directional buttons

Select the directional button taunt message you want to change with the (left) analog stick or directional buttons.

Press the confirm button to access the taunt message library.

Select a taunt and press the confirm button to choose your message.

Repeat for each directional button taunt message you would like to change.

NOTE: You can also change who you exchange Messages With at the top of the screen.

Select Anyone to send/receive from anyone or choose Friends to send/receive only from friends.


8) Change Misc. Profile Settings

Highlight the Other Settings option to “change notifications and other settings”.

Press the confirm button to access the miscellaneous online profile options.

Highlight Notifications with the (left) analog stick or directional buttons:

  • Select Receive to “receive notifications that include promotional information”
  • Select Don’t Receive to “don’t receive notifications that include promotional information”

Press the confirm button to chose your selection.

Highlight Recommendations with the (left) analog stick or directional buttons:

  • Select Enable to “make shared content recommendations based on your habits”
  • Select Disable to “do not make shared content recommendations based on your habits”

Press the confirm button to chose your selection.

NOTE 1: Enabling Recommendations sends your in-game activity to Nintendo to help generate recommendations.

NOTE 2: You can also read a Notice about Online Play on this page by selecting Notice about Online Play and pressing the confirm button.


9) Save Your Online Profile Settings

Return to the Smash Tag online profile settings screen.

Highlight Save and press the confirm button to save your online profile. Alternatively, pressing the + (plus) button will save your online profile.


10) Play The Game With The New Setting
